Read on my website – Read Time: 6 Minutes

Last week, I learned a lesson the hard way.

While hauling hay from the bottom land on our farm (something I should’ve done month’s earlier), I hit a patch of ice. Before I knew it, my tractor and hay wagon jackknifed, sliding sideways down the hill and into a ditch.

It happened fast. One second, everything was fine. The next, I was completely out of control, just along for the ride.

I should have dropped the front loader but panic sets in quick when picking up speed … sideways.

Fortunately, I walked away with nothing more than a bruised ego and a healthy dose of perspective. But as I stood there, staring at the mess I’d made, I couldn’t help but think: What if that had ended differently?

It’s the kind of moment that forces you to pause. The kind that shakes loose all the noise in your head and leaves you with a simple question: Why am I doing all this?

The Risks We Take

Farming, business, life—they all come with risk. We make decisions based on what we think is best at the time. Sometimes, we get it right. Other times, we realize—too late—that we should have made a different choice.

If I’d hauled that hay in the fall, I wouldn’t have been on that ice. If I’d gone a different route, I wouldn’t have slid into a ditch. But hindsight is always perfect, isn’t it?

The same thing happens in business and farming.

We know we should be working on that email list, improving our website, or launching that idea we’ve been sitting on. But we don’t. We tell ourselves we’ll do it later—when we have more time, when things slow down, when we feel more ready.

And then? Life happens. We hit an unexpected patch of ice, and we realize we should have done something sooner.

What Is Your Why?

This whole experience made me stop and ask myself: What is my why?

Why do I wake up early to go out in freezing temperatures? Why do I stay up late building websites, writing emails, and trying to help other farmers and small businesses get online?

The answer is simple: Because it matters.

I farm because I believe in good food raised right, in taking care of the land, and in providing for my family.

I build websites because I know how hard it is for small farms and solopreneurs to get noticed online—and I want to make it easier. I want small farms to have a shot at leaving the rat race, or at least racing less.

I write these emails because I want to remind people like you that you’re not alone in this. The work you’re doing matters. The effort you’re putting in—whether on your farm, in your business, or in your family—it’s worth it.

But sometimes, we need to stop and remember why we started in the first place.

Don’t Wait Too Long

So here’s my challenge for you: Take a minute today to think about your why.

What drives you? What keeps you going when things get tough? Why farming vs something else?

And—just as important—what’s the thing you’ve been putting off?

Because if this whole experience taught me anything, it’s that delays come at a cost. The best time to do the thing you know you need to do? Yesterday. The second-best time? Right now.

Stay safe out there—and keep moving forward.
