Read on my website – Read Time: 5 Minutes

Whether you’ve already dabbled with ChatGPT, Claude, or Google Gemini—or you’re still not quite sure what they are—this week’s email has something for you.
I’ve been using these tools more and more around the farm, and they’ve helped with everything from figuring out my chicken profit margins, getting feedback on my YouTube thumbnails, to getting a jumpstart on social posts when the creativity juices just aren’t flowing.
Here’s what I’ve used AI for lately:
- Planning profits on 300 broilers.
I gave it my feed costs, processing fees, disposables, labor, and sale prices. It shot back an estimate of my profit—and pointed out some things I hadn’t considered.
- Spotting blind spots.
I asked: “What expenses do farmers forget when raising meat chickens?”
It gave me 10 legit answers, including stuff I wasn’t factoring in (mortality and fuel for moving shelters). Not perfect—but a great start.
- Writing a quick social media post when I was too tired to think.
I said: “Write a short, friendly Instagram caption about raising broilers on pasture”. It gave me three rough drafts. I tweaked one, hit post, and moved on.
🛑 Just to be clear:
I don’t use AI to write content or emails.
This is me—my voice, my thoughts, my farm.
But when I need help with everyday tasks like planning, brainstorming, or customer content… it’s been a real time-saver.
Then, there’s spelling and grammar. I run everything through AI when I’m done and tell it to “Improve readability and format to 7th grade reading level”. I make A LOT of typo’s, so this really helps!
🧰 Want to try it out?
Here are 3 prompts you can copy and paste into ChatGPT (or another AI service):
- “I’m raising [insert number] of pasture-raised [breed] laying hens. Feed costs me [insert price] per 50 lb bag, and I go through about [insert number] bags per week. I also spend [insert cost] per dozen on cartons and labels, and I value my labor at [insert hourly rate] for about [insert number] hours per day. I sell eggs for [insert price] per dozen. If I sell all the eggs my flock produces, how much profit can I expect per month? Are there any costs or factors I’m forgetting in this estimate?”
- “Write a short and friendly Facebook post about our farm’s summer CSA starting soon. [add basic details]”
- “What are 5 mistakes new farmers make when setting prices?”
🤔 Which AI Tool Should You Use?
You’ve got options:
- ChatGPT (what I use)
- Claude
- Google Gemini
There are others as well. I recommend picking one and sticking with it. Over time, it’ll remember details—like your farm name, what you raise, and how you like things written. That context makes future chats even more helpful.
👨🌾 One More Thing
If you’ve got a website through Homegrown Hosting, we’ve already built your blog and newsletter setup to work with tools like this—so you can spend less time writing and more time farming.
👉 Take a quick tour of our demo site here.
If you haven’t tried ChatGPT or its peers yet, give it 15 minutes this week. It’s not magic—but it’s the next best thing to hiring help (without the payroll).
Here is also a video i did a while back on using AI to help your farm or homestead.
Until next Sunday

with my appreciation,
Jason
