We get so caught up in the day-to-day grind that we never step back and ask the big question: What do I actually want from this farm?
Some folks want to feed their family. Others want to quit their day job. Maybe just a little side income. Some are perfectly happy with a backyard setup. All perfectly valid.
But if you don’t know which one YOU want, you’re gonna waste a lot of time and money.
What I mean by that is that sometimes we feel a NEED to do something we may not want to do to make the farm profitable, or take on 12 different things that create chaos / stress opposite of the dream farm life we had in mind.
Here’s a simple AI prompt that’ll help you get clear. It’s not gonna tell you what to do, but it’ll ask the right questions.
The 5-Minute Farm Clarity Check
Copy this and paste it into your favorite AI tool (I’m prefer Claude, but Gemini, ChatGPT, etc will work):
You’re a farm advisor helping me get clear on what I actually want from my farming operation. Ask me one question at a time and wait for my answer before asking the next. Keep it conversational and practical.
Start with: “What does your current farm look like and how much time do you spend on it each week?”
Then work through these areas, one question at a time:
- What’s working well vs. what’s driving me crazy
- How farming fits with my job/family life right now
- What “success” looks like to me personally
- Where I want to be in 2-3 years
- What I’m absolutely NOT willing to sacrifice
- My biggest constraints (time, money, land, knowledge)
- Three realistic next steps I could take this month
Keep each question simple and ask follow-ups if my answers are vague. Help me distinguish between what I think I should want vs. what I actually want.
Why This Matters
We hit nearly $200k in farm revenue one year and it about killed us. We were juggling off-farm jobs, homeschooling three kids, YouTube, farm website design, and the whole thing was unsustainable.
Don’t get me wrong, hitting those numbers felt amazing and proved we could build something profitable.
But when I started thinking about doubling it or tripling it (this is what would need to happen if including things like insurance, retirement, help with kids college, etc), reality hit.
Growing any more beyond that (and honestly at that level) would mean either hiring help or completely changing our business model.
That’s when I realized the real win wasn’t just making money, it was making money in a way that actually worked for our life and lifestyle.
Some folks want to hire a crew and go big. Others want to homestead and make a little on the side.
We chose to dial it back and focus on what we could handle sustainably while keeping the priority (for us) on family.
Point is, there’s no wrong answer, but you gotta know what YOUR right answer is.
Sometimes you gotta get clear on what you actually want before chasing what you think you should want.
The prompt above takes 5-10 minutes but I think it will give you some insight into where you’re at, where you want to go, and maybe even save you time, money, and future headaches.
Once you know where you’re headed, everything else becomes a lot clearer.
