Read on my website – Read Time: 5 Minutes

Out of all the marketing and farm business books I’ve read (and I’ve read more than I care to admit), Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller is hands-down the one that made the biggest impact.
When I first started our farm, I thought my website should be about me—why I started farming, how we raise our animals, what we believe in.
But this book flipped that on its head.
Donald Miller makes a simple but powerful point: You’re not the hero—your customer is.
You’re the guide. Your job is to help them solve a problem.
Once I understood that, everything changed. I rewrote my website, emails, and marketing to focus on the customer’s journey.
And suddenly, customers weren’t just buying—they were engaging, asking questions, and coming back.
Here are 3 lessons from the book that you can apply to your farm today (and an example below):
1. Customers don’t buy the best products—they buy the clearest message.
Stop trying to be clever. Be clear. Instead of saying “heritage breed, rotationally grazed, regeneratively managed meat,” try “meat you can trust, from animals raised right.” Save the details for later.
2. The problem your customer is facing should be front and center.
They’re not just looking for eggs—they want healthier breakfasts or to feel better about what they feed their kids. Start with their problem, not your process.
3. You need a call to action.
Seriously—people don’t act unless you tell them what to do. Whether it’s “Order Your Box” or “Join the Waitlist,” make the next step obvious and easy.
If you’ve ever struggled with how to talk about your farm, I can’t recommend this book enough. You can grab a copy here:
